sedak bullet-resistant glass: oversized glazing for the highest security demands

Transparency and security do not have to be mutually exclusive: sedak’s bullet-resistant glass combines maximum protective performance with architectural freedom. As one of the few manufacturers worldwide, sedak produces bullet-resistant safety glass in accordance with DIN EN 1063 in sizes up to 3.6 × 20 meters – either as monolithic laminated safety glass (sedak secuprotect®) or as energy-efficient insulating glass (sedak isosecure®). Both products are certified up to the highest civilian protection class, BR7 NS, as well as STANAG Level 3.

key benefits

  • Highest level of protection up to BR7 NS and STANAG Level 3 – including resistance to armor-piercing
  • Maximum sizes up to 3.6 × 20 m
  • Available as laminated safety glass (secuprotect®) and insulating glass (isosecure®)
  • Without polycarbonate – resulting in lower fire load
  • Increased scratch resistance
  • Improved fire performance
  • Compatible with solar control and thermal insulation coatings (optimized Uw value)
  • Available flat and curved (radius from 1 m)

sedak secuprotect® - laminated safety glass

Monolithic laminated safety glass with a symmetrical build-up – certified for protection from both sides. Ideal for locations with bidirectional pedestrian traffic, such as airports and railway stations. Certified to the highest standards such as BR7 NS according to EN 1063 and Stanag Level 3, sedak secuprotect® provides unparalleled security, including protection against heavy incendiary bullets.

sedak isosecure® - IGU

Bullet-resistant insulating glass without polycarbonate – energy-efficient and compatible with solar control coatings. Designed for façades with high thermal insulation requirements.

sedak ballisitic glass HMG

HMG ballistic high-security glass provides protection against heavy machine gun fire (.50 BMG API) and exceeds the highest standardized rating, BR7. // more information

What do the protection classes BR2–BR7 NS mean?

The protection classes defined in DIN EN 1063 specify which weapon and which type of ammunition the glass must be able to resist. NS stands for “non-splintering,” meaning that the glass must not produce dangerous splinters on the protected side.

Class Typical application
BR2 Bank counters, exchange offices
BR3 Jewelers, private villas
BR4 Embassies, courtrooms
BR5 Military facilities
BR6 High-security buildings
BR7 NS Government buildings, VIP protection
STANAG 3 Military, critical infrastructure

FAQ – Frequently asked questions from architects and building owners

What is the difference between bullet-resistant glass and burglar-resistant glass?

Bullet-resistant glass (according to DIN EN 1063) is designed to withstand projectiles fired from weapons and must absorb high-velocity impact energy. Burglar-resistant glass (P1A–P8B according to DIN EN 356) is designed to resist manual attack using tools. Both requirements can be combined in one laminated build-up. sedak isosecure® can also be certified for burglar resistance as an option.

How large can a single bullet-resistant glass element be?

sedak produces bullet-resistant glass in sizes up to 3.6 × 20 meters – the largest dimensions available worldwide for this security class. This makes it possible to realize floor-to-ceiling, support-free glass façades without visible frame divisions.

Can bullet-resistant glass also be manufactured in curved form?

Yes. Both products – sedak secuprotect® (laminated safety glass) and sedak isosecure® (insulating glass) – are available in curved versions with radii from R = 1 m to ∞. Available curved protection classes are BR4, BR6, and BR7 NS.

Why does sedak not use polycarbonate in its build-up?

Conventional bullet-resistant glass often contains polycarbonate interlayers. These increase the fire load, are more difficult to recycle, and may lead to discoloration over time. sedak’s proprietary polycarbonate-free build-up achieves the same or higher protection classes with lower fire load and better long-term performance – a particular advantage for projects with stringent fire safety requirements.

Can bullet-resistant glass be combined with solar control or thermal insulation?

Yes. sedak isosecure® is designed as an insulating glass unit and is fully compatible with standard solar control and thermal insulation coatings (Low-E, solar control). This allows modern energy efficiency standards to be achieved even at the highest security classes.

Which standards and certifications apply to sedak bullet-resistant glass?

sedak secuprotect® and sedak isosecure® are certified according to DIN EN 1063 (classes BR2–BR7 NS) as well as STANAG Level 3 NS. Testing is carried out by accredited institutes. Test reports and certificates are available on request for tender documentation.

What does the planning process for a façade with bullet-resistant glass look like?

Typically: (1) threat analysis by the security planner to define the required protection class; (2) preliminary inquiry to sedak with format, protection class, and installation situation; (3) technical consultation and sample request; (4) approval by the project planner; (5) production and delivery. sedak supports architects and planners throughout all phases and also assists with specification texts.
