Iconsiam - Bangkok, Thailand

Longest pleated all-glass facade in the world

Iconsiam is an enormous complex on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Alongside hotels, apartments and numerous catering offerings, it is one of Asia’s largest shopping centers – more than 7,000 international and Thai fashion and luxury brands offer endless shopping opportunities. Some of these entities opened their first store in Thailand in this extraordinary shopping mall.

The glass facade combines prestigious design with traditional Thai influences. The Iconsiam all-glass facade is the longest pleated glass facade in the world and is inspired by the craftsmanship of the Thai "Krathong“ folding technique. This is especially apparent on the glass facade: the double inclined position of each glass panel.

At a height of 24m, the facade extends over three floors. It is 300m long and features a total area of 5,300sqm. sedak produced 333 glass fins and 333 glass panes for the facade of the superlative structure. The glass fins are made up of a maximum of 8-layer laminates up to 15.9m long and have an extreme aspect ratio of 5:79. They have holes drilled in them, to which metal shoes weighing tons were mounted while they were still in production at sedak, to facilitate assembly on the construction site. Custom-made wooden templates were used to precisely fit the oversized glass fins. From the time the glass panes for the facade were used, the facade was self-supporting.
